Birdapolooza - Thursday Lab

Boat-tailed Grackle (Juvenile Female)
Location: Downtown Hampton
Identifier(s): Tawny-brown with darker wings and tail. Hint of spotting or streaking on breast.

House Sparrow
Location: Christopher Newport University
Identifier(s): Gray crown; chestnut nape; black bib and bill.



Red-tailed Hawk (Juvenile)
Locations: Top, Sandy Bottom Nature Park; Bottom, College of William and Mary
Identifier(s): Gray-brown tail with many blackish bands.

Great Blue Heron
Location: Sandy Bottom Nature Park
Identifier(s): large, gray-blue with a black stripe extending above the eye and a white foreneck streaked with black.

Turkey Vulture
Location: Sandy Bottom Nature Park
Identifier(s): Red head, white bill, and brown legs.

American Kestrel (Male)
Location: Sandy Bottom Nature Park
Identifier(s): Russet back and tail, double black stripes on white face. Pale underwings. Row of white, circular spots on trailing edge of wings. Blue-gray wing coverts.

Mourning Dove
Location: Sandy Bottom Nature Park
Identifier(s): Long tail that tapers to a point. Black spots on upperwing. Pinkish below. White tips on outer tail feathers.


Ring-necked Duck (Male)
Location: Sandy Bottom Nature Park
Identifier(s): Peaked head with bold white ring near tip of bill.Second white ring at base of bill. White crescent separates black breast from gray sides. Cinnamon collar.
